Want to reduce risk of heart attack or stroke?

First you need to know your Qrisk score . This is easy to find out. It takes account of your age, weight, smoking status, and current illnesses if applicable. Of course, you may not know your blood pressure and cholesterol level. So best way to find out is ask the surgery and will can let you know what your Qrisk2 score is. There are other scores available eg Qrisk 3 which takes in to account some other illnesses but currently we can only provide Qrisk2 score.

If Qrisk2 score is over 10% than what it means is you have one in ten chance (in next 10 years) of having a stroke or heart attack but remember this is only a predictive tool. If it is above 10 then there are things you can do to reduce risk.

  1. Getting cholesterol level down (diet, exercise and if needed medications eg statins)
  2. Reducing weight so your BMI is 25 or less ( 23 or less for ethnic minorities)
  3. Blood pressure is in normal range with or without medication
  4. Of course you cant do anything about your age, sex and height or family history.

You can always make an appointment for NHS health check at the surgery.
